Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used forms of medicine in the world. Originating in East Asia more than 2,500 years ago, acupuncture is currently one of the most thoroughly researched, practiced, and respected forms of complementary medicine available anywhere.

According to Oriental Medicine, your overall health is determined by the quality of the Qi (energy) flow through the natural pathways of your body (meridians). Acupuncture uses a variety of techniques, including placing very thin sterile needles into specific points on the body, to stimulate and improve your Qi flow. The many benefits of acupuncture include:

  • Pain reduction
  • Stress and tension relief
  • Increased energy levels
  • Stronger digestion
  • Relief from bad habits and addictions
  • Greater sense of overall health and well-being

Your First Visit:

Generally, your first visit is longer than your follow-up visits and will consist of many questions. The initial questioning is a very important even though many of the questions may seem entirely irrelevant to your condition. The answers you provide to the questions, along with other basic diagnostic tools such as looking at your tongue pressing your abdomen and feeling your pulse allow the acupuncturist to customize the treatment specifically to you. This individualization of the treatments is one of the strong points of oriental medicine. It is why people may experience broad changes within themselves after receiving acupuncture for a specific complaint. It also means that the treatments can be modified over time if needed.

After the initial questioning and the checking of your pulse, abdomen, and tongue, your practitioner will form a diagnosis, treatment plan and begin the acupuncture treatment. In most cases, the initial treatment is fairly conservative to ensure that you are comfortable and to allow your acupuncturist to see how you respond to acupuncture. Based on your diagnosis, the initial treatment consists of 3 - 5 acupuncture points. Your acupuncturist will describe the treatment and his/her intent with the points. After the treatment it is common for an acupuncturist to offer a basic treatment plan. They are also likely to offer various beneficial lifestyle changes which may help to improve your overall condition. This may include dietary changes, exercise, meditation, etc.

Here are a few more tips to get in with the flow of things:

  • Arrive 10 minutes early on your first visit to fill out any paperwork
  • Come in comfortable clothing that can be easily rolled up to elbow and knee height... skinny jeans are not recommended!

Cupping

Cupping has been a part of Oriental Medicine for over 2,500 years. It relieves aches and pains, improves circulation, and also helps with respiratory and digestive issues. I simply place a specialized "cup" onto specific points on your body, and then use suction to draw your skin up into the cups. It doesn't hurt — it simply draws fresh blood to that area of your body, which facilitates the cleansing and strengthening of your Qi (energy). The end result is a greater overall sense of health and well-being.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is an Oriental Medicine technique that involves the burning of mugwort, a small, spongy herb, to facilitate healing and health. Moxibustion has been used for healing purposes throughout Asia for thousands of years. The purpose of moxibustion, as with most forms of Oriental Medicine, is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of Qi (energy), and enhance your overall vitality and health.

Among other benefits, a landmark study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1998 found that 75.4% of women suffering from breech presentations before childbirth had fetuses that rotated to the normal position after receiving moxibustion at an acupuncture point on the bladder meridian.

Taoist Meditation Exercise

what is Sun Do ?

Sun Do is the practice of developing a healthy and peaceful existence within the universe through breathing exercise. Beginning 9,700 years ago, Sun Do is the secret of preserving one’s health, remaining free of disease, and invigorating the body and mind.  Sun Do has three unique goals as follows.

1. Breathing for Rejuvenation
Sun Do practice emphasizes a unique breathing method that focuses on the lower abdomen life energy center, Danjeon. The Sun Do Danjeon Breathing method helps practitioners to take in the abundant life energy in the atmosphere and enhances the energy level and flow of one’s body.

2. Exercise for Transformation
Sun Do is composed of series of stretching exercises, sequential breathing postures, self massages and physical workouts which reflect the flow of life energy. Sun Do practice helps achieve physical & mental balance and focus and enhances the vitality, flexibility and strength of one’s body & mind.

3. Meditation for Enlightenment

During the main breathing session, we stop thinking and concentrate on breathing.  When you are thinking, you lose your eyes; when you follow your thinking, you lose your ears or nose.   Concentrating on breathing enables our mind to be still without being distracted.  Our mind is more peaceful and our thoughts become less agitated and obsessive, so we are more aware of ourselves and our surroundings. The aim of meditation is to cultivate a state of mind which is equally quiet and bright. When we keep the mind awake from moment to moment and see our true nature through this breathing meditation, we can get enlightenment.

The three components are all practiced together at the same time.

Practice Routine of Sun Do

Internal Practice

In most Sun Do studios, the practice sessions are usually composed of three parts:

 1. Warm-Up Exercises (20 Min)

The Warm-Up Exercise is for the relaxation and concentration of body and mind to prepare for the main breathing practice.

2. Dan Jeon Breathing  (24/ 38 Min)

This session is performed with a specific sequence of postures at each level to accumulate Qi and bring universal life energy into our bodies.

 3. Cool-Down Exercises (11/ 20 Min)

The cool down exercises empower the mind and body by utilizing the Qi accumulated during the main breathing session.

 External Practice

This is taught only when the practitioner has reached a certain level in the internal practice. External practice helps solidify the life force in Danjeon.
